A burst of light and our temporal travelers found themselves back in the belly of the Citadel, but immediately, something was different. The brothers, Ali and Rashid were no longer traveling with the group. They gathered back up with Midriana and Carl who still held the front gates. Departing for the woods, they took a long rest and discussed the events.
Returning to the conversation of Ali and Rashid, Midriana, Targen, and Vaughan had no recollection of anyone by those names, but as the time travelers rehashed the history of the two men they met after the Pegasus was freed in Hillsfar, Midriana remembered and answered, “Yes but we never learned their names and they never came with us.” It was clear that history had changed.
As the grouped discussed the confusing turn of events, the realized a number of other things had changed. There had never been a bandit attack on Graydale. Targen had never gone to Hillsfar to gather up heroes. Instead, Jebeddo Morphallum, Ellaway’s great great uncle had written her, not to come to the aid of the village, but instead to visit with him, having heard that she was exploring the magical arts. After arriving, according to Targen, Jebeddo had shared with her stories of his adventuring days. He emphasized that a wizard who learns in a lab alone never becomes a true wizard and encouraged her to find a group to travel with. She found Targen, Barakas, and a group of three others, including an Elven Wizard named Ilesandri.
After a terrible fight in the Citadel, Illesandri and two others in their group fell. Barakas, Targen, and Ellaway decided to make their escape. While removing the main gate from its mountings, another group of four: Midriana, Carl, Bolton, and Isa stumbled across them. They took a rest in the nearby woods together and decided to try to best the Citadel together.
Midriana filled in the story for the group. As in the timeline the time travelers remembered, Midriana’s main function in life was to keep Carl in check or at least apologize for his actions. Traveling to Hillsfar, they had made a mockery of the funeral as before. Isa used the chaos to free the Pegasus. This time, it was the arrival of the guard that caused Targen to flee in the coffin laden carriage and Isa hitched a ride, concerned they might be coming for her.
The group encountered the crowds in the street and chaos broke out there as well, with Carl using the opportunity to strike down the man on the soap box. The woman on the balcony seeing the events, and leaving before they returned.
At the Blushing Bride, they heard a rumor about cultists of the Zhenterim gathering in the north, possibly at the ruins of Citadel of the Raven. Stopping the cultists appealed to Midriana and the promise of “gold and stuff” appealed to Carl. The only trouble is they were short in the sword arm department.
Planning to head out to the north, they passed by the strange events at the Bergenblade house, just as a well armed halfling stumbled upon the scene. The group opted to investigate together. This time, with fewer people, the progress through the home was slower. When they finally reached Bergenblade, the bandits had brought his daughter up to the room and used her from leverage. They never saw the lead bandit nor followed up at The Green Lion. No one ever requested the aid of Bergenblade’s armed forces. But Bolton proved himself skilled with the sword and the group asked him to join them to investigate the rumor of cultists.
This group – Bolton, Carl, Midriana, and Isa – passed through Graydale, but made little note of it, just another town on the way. The Citadel was giving them some trouble when they met the others and, after fighting off a fire elemental together, escaped into the forest for a rest.
The time travelers in turn shared the tale of their foray into the past.
The group returned once more to the lower level of the Citadel, fighting Grell, Phase Spiders, and Kua Toa. In one room, they found a mural that protrayed whoever looked into it being betrayed by a companion, and the words, “The Citadel shall be restored when the Nightmare Gate opens.” Shortly after that, the group decided to take a large and valuable statue back to town to sell and to see what else had changed.
As they returned to the hamlet, the found a farm on the north side of Graydale, burnt to the ground. They rushed to aid, but found no one injured. Asking around, they learned that just the day before, bandits had come to the town and threatened to burn everything down if the didn’t provide a hefty share of the harvest at High Harvesttide. Asking what the Bevy had planned, the learned that the Bevy was meeting later today.
In the conversation, Targen mentioned having a connection to the Bevy, his mother. The time travelers questioned it, having thought it had been his father. He explained that his father had gone off to fight the orc hordes in the north and died there. His mother raised him alone.
The group asked who now sat on the Bevy and learned it was essentially the same, except that instead of Targen’s father, it was his mother that sat on the council.
In the discussion of other things that had changed with his father’s absence, the topic of Targen’s sword came up. The sword, previously dedicated to Cyric had been cleansed by the High Holy Justicar, Gerard Awelt. Isa went to the temple to check on the High Holy Justicar from the original timeline, Decius Mac, only to learn that he was now a mere Justicar, lower in rank than in the other timeline.
It also came up in discussing the sword that the group had stumbled upon the graveyard inhabited with undead. Ellaway’s great great uncle had not sent them upon the task. Ellaway went to check on Jebeddo, only to find him away, searching for material components.
Lastly, stopping in at the Gray Stag, the group saw Anders Graystag, Niels father, who they suspected was no longer alive in the previous timeline. They also saw Guster, the guard from the prison in the past, who was now the constable, and Vala, the constable in the previous timeline, was now but a guard.
The session ended with discussion of trying to track the bandits, the tracks now being more fresh, and trying to learn what the Bevy had planned in response.
Note: the group did have to take a long rest on the way back.
Gold: 107 each (from the sale of the statue)
Down Days: 10 (total of 100 for most players, less any spent)
Intangible: The experience of altering history with mere words
Also: Side effects of the time shift – Targen’s +1 Great Sword no longer tainted by Cyric and Midriana and Targen gained 197 GP each since in their timeline, they didn’t split gold with Ali and Rashid.
