A burst of light and our temporal travelers found themselves back in the belly of the Citadel, but immediately, something was different. The brothers, Ali and Rashid were no longer traveling with the group. They gathered back up with Midriana and Carl who still held the front gates. Departing for the woods, they took a long rest and discussed the events.

Returning to the conversation of Ali and Rashid, Midriana, Targen, and Vaughan had no recollection of anyone by those names, but as the time travelers rehashed the history of the two men they met after the Pegasus was freed in Hillsfar, Midriana remembered and answered, “Yes but we never learned their names and they never came with us.” It was clear that history had changed.

As the grouped discussed the confusing turn of events, the realized a number of other things had changed. There had never been a bandit attack on Graydale. Targen had never gone to Hillsfar to gather up heroes. Instead, Jebeddo Morphallum, Ellaway’s great great uncle had written her, not to come to the aid of the village, but instead to visit with him, having heard that she was exploring the magical arts. After arriving, according to Targen, Jebeddo had shared with her stories of his adventuring days. He emphasized that a wizard who learns in a lab alone never becomes a true wizard and encouraged her to find a group to travel with. She found Targen, Barakas, and a group of three others, including an Elven Wizard named Ilesandri.

After a terrible fight in the Citadel, Illesandri and two others in their group fell. Barakas, Targen, and Ellaway decided to make their escape. While removing the main gate from its mountings, another group of four: Midriana, Carl, Bolton, and Isa stumbled across them. They took a rest in the nearby woods together and decided to try to best the Citadel together.

Midriana filled in the story for the group. As in the timeline the time travelers remembered, Midriana’s main function in life was to keep Carl in check or at least apologize for his actions. Traveling to Hillsfar, they had made a mockery of the funeral as before. Isa used the chaos to free the Pegasus. This time, it was the arrival of the guard that caused Targen to flee in the coffin laden carriage and Isa hitched a ride, concerned they might be coming for her.

The group encountered the crowds in the street and chaos broke out there as well, with Carl using the opportunity to strike down the man on the soap box. The woman on the balcony seeing the events, and leaving before they returned.

At the Blushing Bride, they heard a rumor about cultists of the Zhenterim gathering in the north, possibly at the ruins of Citadel of the Raven. Stopping the cultists appealed to Midriana and the promise of “gold and stuff” appealed to Carl. The only trouble is they were short in the sword arm department.

Planning to head out to the north, they passed by the strange events at the Bergenblade house, just as a well armed halfling stumbled upon the scene. The group opted to investigate together. This time, with fewer people, the progress through the home was slower. When they finally reached Bergenblade, the bandits had brought his daughter up to the room and used her from leverage. They never saw the lead bandit nor followed up at The Green Lion. No one ever requested the aid of Bergenblade’s armed forces. But Bolton proved himself skilled with the sword and the group asked him to join them to investigate the rumor of cultists.

This group – Bolton, Carl, Midriana, and Isa – passed through Graydale, but made little note of it, just another town on the way. The Citadel was giving them some trouble when they met the others and, after fighting off a fire elemental together, escaped into the forest for a rest.

The time travelers in turn shared the tale of their foray into the past.

The group returned once more to the lower level of the Citadel, fighting Grell, Phase Spiders, and Kua Toa. In one room, they found a mural that protrayed whoever looked into it being betrayed by a companion, and the words, “The Citadel shall be restored when the Nightmare Gate opens.” Shortly after that, the group decided to take a large and valuable statue back to town to sell and to see what else had changed.

As they returned to the hamlet, the found a farm on the north side of Graydale, burnt to the ground. They rushed to aid, but found no one injured. Asking around, they learned that just the day before, bandits had come to the town and threatened to burn everything down if the didn’t provide a hefty share of the harvest at High Harvesttide. Asking what the Bevy had planned, the learned that the Bevy was meeting later today.

In the conversation, Targen mentioned having a connection to the Bevy, his mother. The time travelers questioned it, having thought it had been his father. He explained that his father had gone off to fight the orc hordes in the north and died there. His mother raised him alone.

The group asked who now sat on the Bevy and learned it was essentially the same, except that instead of Targen’s father, it was his mother that sat on the council.

In the discussion of other things that had changed with his father’s absence, the topic of Targen’s sword came up. The sword, previously dedicated to Cyric had been cleansed by the High Holy Justicar, Gerard Awelt. Isa went to the temple to check on the High Holy Justicar from the original timeline, Decius Mac, only to learn that he was now a mere Justicar, lower in rank than in the other timeline.

It also came up in discussing the sword that the group had stumbled upon the graveyard inhabited with undead. Ellaway’s great great uncle had not sent them upon the task. Ellaway went to check on Jebeddo, only to find him away, searching for material components.

Lastly, stopping in at the Gray Stag, the group saw Anders Graystag, Niels father, who they suspected was no longer alive in the previous timeline. They also saw Guster, the guard from the prison in the past, who was now the constable, and Vala, the constable in the previous timeline, was now but a guard.

The session ended with discussion of trying to track the bandits, the tracks now being more fresh, and trying to learn what the Bevy had planned in response.

Note: the group did have to take a long rest on the way back.

Targen Hecht (Sam’s Character) age 4

Our heroic adventurers stood in the chambers of the ruins of the Citadel of the Raven and there was a flash of light, when four of them found themselves back at the hamlet of Graydale. But things had changed, some of the buildings were missing and the people all looked different. The Temple of Tyr was still under construction, and then they notices that the people were not moving.

Two elven women suddenly stood before them, one glowing with the radiant orange of the rising sun, the other with the luminescence of the moon – Sehanine Moonbow. The other elf spoke, “You must preserve the past. Those who are to live must live. I cannot hold time for long in this period, ask what you need to know.”

“Who is in danger?” asked Bolton.

“Targen Hecht,” answered the elf.

“If kangaroos, wallabies, and wallaroos are all different species, why are wallaroos named after the other two?”

Sehanine gave him a brief discourse on the historical linguistic development on the original of the word “wallaroo.”

“How will we preserve the past?” asked Isa.

“By doing what you have always done,” the unknown woman answered.

“Tell us more,” said Ellaway.

“We have have always brought you to the past and you have always done the same thing.”

“Can you help me find a dire platypus to serve as a mount?” Carl asked.

Sehanine opened her mouth to speak and the elves vanished and time began to move again.

The group immediately made for Targen’s father’s house and after Isa failed to sneak up to peer into the house, nearly resulting in a fight with Targen’s father Pyotr, Bolton explained that a goddess had sent them on their task. Pyotr explained he was on a sabbatical from the temple and that they should speak to the High Holy Justicar.

The group went to the temple, and again, Isa’s attempt to sneak up in order to hear the subject of an argument between the high priest and a young man nearly resulted in the constable being summoned, again, Bolton explained their mission. The priest asked if one of them was one of “the Chosen,” and Carl convincingly claimed the role. Explaining that there is half orc of great importance, the priest said he knew of two in town and would arrange interviews with the family, but it would take time.

In the course of the conversation, Ellaway realized their point in the timeline. It was 1484, the beginning of the appearance of the Chosen, nearing the end of the spellplague that ravaged the world and the weave that holds the magic of the realms in check, and possibly mere days before the hordes of orcs would rampage from the north and the war between the Dales and Sembia would begin.

They returned to Pyotr and told him they had reason to believe orcs were amassing an army. Pyotr suggested the tell the High Stag of the Bevy, the governing body of the hamlet, as well as the High Holy Justicar. Pyotr turned back to his house, calling out, “Honey?” before closing the door. Ellaway recalled that Targen did not recall any parent apart from his father.

Bolton remained behind to watch the house and later saw Pyotr kiss a woman and small half orc goodbye and leave with his armor and sword. Bolton confronted him to encourage him to stay, but he answered, “If orcs are attacking, it is my duty and responsibility.”

The group went to the Gray Stag to talk to the Bevy and asking, the barkeep directed them to Anders Graystag who was just sitting down with his son to dinner. They turned to see the man sitting with a young Niels Graystag. Isa returned to Bolton to watch the house. Carl and Ellaway talked to the High Stag and told him they knew of reports of orcs amassing. Anders told his son to gather the Bevy and headed upstairs. Ellaway tried to follow and to be included, but the High Stag firmly insisted she wait in the tavern until they call on her.

Niels spoke to an elderly man before leaving the tavern and Ellaway approached that man as well, and remarked that she was looking forward to meeting with them.

As Niels arrived at the house of Targen, Bolton and Isa confronted him, their suspicion from the future giving them reason for concern. Niels sternly and bluntly insisted he was on official business, so they followed him to the door and listened as he told Pyotr’s wife of the call to the Bevy. As Niels walked off, Bolton and Isa offered to care for the young boy, but she insisted she had the matter covered and took Targen and headed for the Gray Stag. Bolton escorted them, but Isa remained behind to search the house.

As the Bevy arrived and preceded up the stairs, Mrs. Hecht was the last, stopping to talk with the barkeep and seating young Targen on a bar stool. Bolton sat nearby at the bar, but Carl sat next to Targen. First, interfering with a local who was trying to flirt with an elven adventurer by making a gold piece appear, drawn from the local’s behind, which he then gave to young Targen, and began to teach him the arts of flirtation with the elven woman has his subject.

Ellaway followed Targen’s mother up the stairs to conference but she politely thanked Ellaway and explained that she did not know the full extend for the reason for the meeting and that a decision would be made and she could be called on if needed. Ellaway used Detect Thoughts on her and then peered through the keyhole to glimpse the thoughts of a couple others, and detected both fear and doubt about her claims and story. When the spell ended, she decided to reach out to her great great uncle.

Passing Isa on the way out, Ellaway asked her to wait for the Bevy to call on her and come get her when it was time. Ellaway went to the wizard’s tower, but as usual, got no answer when she knocked. Isa went to the door and tried to listen with no luck and so instead used her slippers of spider climbing to reach the window from the outside. After nearly being caught, she sprint to safety across the side of the building.

Carl began to use prestidigitation to tell Targen amazing stories and drew other onlookers from the tavern. The wild nature of magic taken over at one point and setting the bar on fire, Carl quickly portrayed it as another illusion, part of a story, before using magic to put the fire out.

Bolton went outside, looking for Ellaway or Isa and heard a noise coming from beside the tavern. Isa saw him and followed. They discovered a woman, bound and gagged in the wood box, her equipment and outer layer of clothing missing. Freeing her and giving her Isa’s spare clothes, they learned she was attacked by a teenage boy and knocked out and awoke in the box.

As this was happening, Ellaway returned to the tavern just in time to see a woman rise and head for the exit of the tavern. Her adventuring companions called out to her, “Lyssa, where are you going?” but she gave no answer. Ellaway decided to follow. She ran for the stables and Ellaway cast Charm Person on her, she turned and agreed to walk back to the tavern with Ellaway, but along the way, attacked her. Ellaway called for help and cast Tasha’s uncontrollable laughter on her and Isa arrive and bound her. Ellaway dropped the spell in order to reader he thoughts, but the spellplague interfered with her magic. The woman shape shifted into a teen boy, smaller enough to loosen the bindings in order to escape. Bolton went to the tavern get Carl and Isa began to strike at the shape changer. The boy began to cry out for help, and Isa tried to put him down quickly, but he was nimble.

At the tavern, Bolton saw the same woman from before and approached their group to help explain about the shape changer. Outside, the constable arrived and ushered them all toward the tavern, despite Ellaway’s warnings that he was a shape shifter. Since the constable was alone, Isa ran to escape, Ellaway and the boy were taken to the jail where Ellaway insisted on having the boy in a cell as well. The constable, Berten, sent the guard to check on the boy’s house, and then freed the boy from his cell. The changeling then struck the constable down just as Isa returned. The two fought it out, but Isa fell. She managed to inflict enough harm that Ellaway’s final spell took the doppleganger down and transformed him into his original self.

After the guard returned and saw the bodies, he freed Ellaway and the doppleganger vanished.

The group was later able to learn that the adventuring group had scheduled a meeting with the clerics of Tyr and likely, the creature planned to take Pyotr’s place after that meeting.

Carl offered parting words to Targen, saying if one day he met a man who looked like him and that man said, “look over there!” that he should listen to the man (as this is what happened when Carl first met Targen).

Ellaway left Niels with the advice of befriending the other Dales, before the group was stolen back to their own time by the goddess.

When we last left our intrepid adventurers, they had hopes of finally escaping the Citadel of the Raven. As the removed the large door, they found the stone for the crumbling Citadel had been piled against it from the outside. Spending another twenty minutes clearing the stone, they finally made their escape.

But, not before a lone adventurer who had lost all of his companions and was also trapped in the Citadel found them, and joined them. Traveling thirty minutes from the Citadel into the woods and slept through the morning and early afternoon. After some discussion, the group decided to make another run at the Citadel, and Barakas agreed to join them.

Barakas’s group had explored a different corner of the Citadel and believed it was the work space of an arcane caster. The group decided to explore that way. They indeed found an area fitting of a spellcaster, including arcane and alchemy accouterments, spell components and spellbooks. Luckily, Ali had been asked to cast a detect magic moments before and noticed that the books glowed with a magical aura, and so might containment magical wards and traps. Ellaway stowed the books for later examination.

In another room, they found an ornate box of red velvet and silver filigree in the image of an imprisoned impish creature. Upon opening the box, they found a magic chime that they learn was capable of opening locks and doors, but also could create a prison from an enclosed space. At that moment, they wondered if they had set anything free.

A room containing a labyrinth had a hole dropping 50’ down to a catacombs below. This area remains unexplored. While in this room, Isa broke something she had, and a moment later the goddess of the moon, Sehanine Moonbow, appeared. Isa asked for her help to heal Rashid of his 50 years of aging, and Sehanine offered her the capacity to heal Rashid or for everyone to be healed, and she chose to heal everyone. %0 years melted from Rashid, and 10 from Bolton. Carl and Midriana, who were keeping an eye on the front gate (players out that day) were washed over with moonlight and experienced the same blessing and healing.

The group was surprised by a couple of bone naga in a room with 3 statues. After beating the statues they worked to resolve the puzzle of the statues each concealing a secret door. When they had solved the puzzles, they found a treasure trove of white objects, many with fur, all looking warm and comfortable along with a holy symbol of Auril, the Goddess of Winter.

They were nearly surprised when another group of adventurers busted into the room. Lead by a Dragonborn in Plate armor and wielding a shield accompanied by a human cleric of Waukeen, God of Trade, and two High Elves, one a rogue the other an arcane spellcaster. After tense negotiation, the group traded some information about where they had been and what they had seen for the location of stairs going down and the “big room” where caution of the ceiling is important. Both groups had plans for heading down a floor, but the other group’s spellcaster felt it was important to check the wizard’s corner (which our adventurers had already finished with) before heading down.

The group headed downstairs and encounter a pair of grell and found a pit leading into the underdark, along with an iron chest containing more goods. Finally, exploration of the Citadel had begun to pay off.

When we last left our intrepid adventurers, they had set out from crumbling lookout tower that once served as part of the defenses for the Citadel of the Raven, which they had taken from Gnollish inhabitants heading for the treacherous remnant of the ruins of the Citadel. Traveling through the forests of the Dragonspire mountains, they came upon a clearing that offered a view of the road and Citadel ahead.

Long unused roads from the East and West converged at the edge of the woods and turned north toward the Citadel. Standing, if standing is the right word, on height overlooking a large town, was the Citadel, largely beyond the capacity for repair. The town lay below it, having been razed to the ground.

With much discussion of whether to approach Citadel or town first, the group decided that the searching of the town would be too long and laborious with little likely gain and so followed the road to the gates of the Citadel. Along the way, they were attacked by plant creatures, but a fireball from the sorcerer’s Necklace of Fireballs and a trudging through vines by Targen and Bolton, made quick work of them.

The group came upon the gates, finding the debris of fallen or thrown stones littering the ground outside the gate. Finding no traps, they proceeded into the Citadel. They followed the hallway to the east where Midriana took the lead in searching for traps (the resident sneak – Isa the monk, having been left behind for moments of meditation (player absence)). A room of loose and electrified tiles were discovered and careful investigation revealed that the tiles could be jumped over. Midriana did so, in order to check and investigate the next room.

After peering into the room, the Midriana turned around and placed one hand over one eye and the other atop her head, fingers extended and wiggling. The group caught on that silence was necessary, so Targen mouthed back to Midriana, “a pirate chicken?” Midriana quietly pulled a vial of ink from her sack, uncapped it, pulled out paper and quill and wrote on paper. After a minute of blowing on the ink to dry it, she folded the paper and sent it flying to her companions. After reading, “Beholder” on the paper, they signaled her return. Thanks to her Pass Without Trace spell, she quietly closed the door and leapt back to the group. Carl then asked, “why didn’t you just draw a beholder and hold it up?”

The group then turned back to try a different route. Realizing that Ali was skilled in sneaky arts, they asked him to disarm a trap on a door with rusty hinges. In the process, however, he triggered the trap and was electrocuted down to a single hit point. In the room they had an encounter with rust monsters who damaged Bolton’s shield (-1), Targen’s armor (-1), Bolton’s sword (-1), and Targen’s warhammer (-2) which he opted to use when her learned of the rust monsters. In the adjacent room, zombies and a wight began to poor into the rust monster’s room, and the fight continued. Targen and Bolton made a bottle neck of the entryway and gradually dispatched the undead. Ellaway’s Tasha’s Uncontrollable Hideous Laughter kept the wight from inflicting any significant harm.

The group decided to set up barricades for the two rooms and settle in for a long rest. Targen took watch over one door while Ali guarded the other. Within the hours, 2 ghosts drifted through the walls. Carl awoke with a fright and upon seeing the creatures aged 10 years. He burnt them both with Burning Hands, while screaming a string of obscenities. The group was awoken just as the ghosts faded into the ethereal. Carl was riddled with questions of why they were awoken if there was nothing to fight. The group returned to its rest, but two hours later, the ghosts returned and awoke Bolton and Midriana, and Bolton aged 10 years at the sight of the creatures. Again, they faded into the ethereal. The group decided that it would be better to rest outside, especially since these ghosts seemed to have died wearing Zhent uniforms, only to discover that they entry gate was somehow sealed from the outside.

The decided to continue exploring, since rest seemed to be evading them. They found a deadend hallway with a single platinum coin. Midriana found a trap so Ellaway summoned an Unseen Servant to collect the coin.

Proceeding, they found their way into a room filled with torture devices where someone had written on the wall, “Beneath the fountain.” Isa returned to the group, just as they forced their way into another room, containing zombies and another wight.

When we last left our intrepid adventurers, they had taken an outpost tower of the ruins of the Citadel of the Ravens from a group of gnolls and ogres. Ellaway, having acquired the language of the gnolls from overhearing their conversation, questions the captured gnoll. Feeoughan was the name he gave when pressed. Ellaway asked if he had seen a group of 8-10 people pas by in hopes of finding out more about the bandits threatening the hamlet of Graysdale. After counting on his fingers, the gnoll offered up that a group that size had passed by, one of them was flying, and they went, “that way,” pointing east.

Ellaway quickly put together that this was unlikely the group they were looking for, since the direction they were traveling was the opposite of what they had seen evidence for with the group of bandits. Targen and Carl advocated for disposing of the evil creature, once they had finished questioning it, but the compassionate Ellaway and Isa chose to keep him alive and bound.

The magic items found in the tower were identified and with the treasure were distributed and efforts for recovery from the fight were made. Watches were set, and in the middle of the night, Carl spotted four creatures approaching whose bodies were as dark as the night. Two flew on wings and two walked on the group. Carl attacked with a loud Thunderwave, waking everyone. Then watched as the creatures passed through the stone. Through their efforts, they realized that little outside of radiant energy did much harm to these creatures, and the fight was hard pressed. Midrianna and Targen both fell, and if not for the healing efforts of the party might have died.

After a lengthy recovery and long discussion of what lay in the area, the group decided to press on to the Citadel of the Raven in hopes of finding the bandits, or at least more resources to combat their threat.

With High Harvestide approaching rapidly, the group continued to travel north, away from Graydale.

Our intrepid adventurers spent a few days in the hamlet of Graydale, attending to personal matters. Targen took the magical great sword marked with the Holy Symbol of Cyric to the local Wizard, Jebeddo Morphallam to ask if he knew if it could be reconsecrated or if the holy symbol could be removed. Jebeddo told him that it sounded like a question for a priest. Decious Mac, the local High Holy Justice at the temple of Tyr, after suggesting a contribution would be favorable, cast an Augury spell, only to tell Targen that it would not be wise to wield a weapon dedicated to a God who trampled on over and justice, but that he would write to Mother Church for further instruction. Targen asked how it should be stored until then, and Decious performed a burial ritual on sanctified ground.

Isa trained her pet mouse to choose through ropes on command.

Bolton went with Targen to see Jebeddo in hopes of learned some tricks for using his newly acquired Alchemy skills. Jebeddo sold him the tools of the trade but claimed to have important business to attend to.

Once personal matters had been attended to, the group set out for another scouting mission. With only 14 days left until high harvest tide, they hoped to learn more about the bandits who threatened the village.

Traveling north again, they returned to the camp they had found and searched for more tracks. The most they could determine is that no one had returned to the camp since they were last there.

They decided to explore the ruins of the Citadel of the Raven. Coming upon an outpost of the citadel, a tower that once served as part of the Citadel’s defense, they sent Ellaway’s Raven familiar out 100s of yards to scout the tower from afar. It was not long, however, before they saw the familiar fall from the sky.

Sneaking closer they spotted more ogres and gnolls, and orchestrated a strategic attack. Using extensive spell resources the group managed to take the tower before nightfall.

This is where we left our adventurers.

– A swatch of canvas about 6" to a side, painted with a picnic scene beside a river. There are no people in the painting, but every now and then you think you see someone, but then you can never find them. The painting bares a signature, but it is illegible.
– A silver circlet formed to appear like intertwining vines and leaves. The silver has an odd, faint, greenish hint to it. There is an engraving on the inside of the circlet but it is too warn to make out.
– A plain, man’s, wedding ring, gold
– A pair of silver fingers, sized to fit on human thumbs. The silver fingers are hollow, but extend past the thumbs by 2 inches
– A bear pelt, tanned and preserved
– An elaborate ivory flagon lined with silver.

After a night of rest and recovery, the group gathered with Niels at the Gray Stag. Targen updated Niels on recent goings on, including news of the promise of a Red Plume contingent which was well received. After catching up, Niels asked Targen if we would be willing to take on an additional project once the town’s fate has been determined. His grandfather’s companion, Ingus, is rumored to have built a tower nearby containing clues to the location of his father’s treasure. Ingus wrote a poem containing clues to the location of the tower. The group tentatively agreed to participate. Before leaving, Targen promised the contents of a defense tower being built on the north side of town after everything has been settled.

Ellaway left a note with her aunt to let her uncle know that she would be leaving town on a scouting mission and that he should stay put until she returns. Once the group reconvened at the tavern, had gathered their things and were ready to leave, an Orc constable, named Vala, entered the Gray Stag followed by a young man carrying a scroll. He approached Targen and gave him the scroll. The scroll told him that a leader of the red plumes would be in town tomorrow, out of uniform, to speak with him regarding the contingency. As Ella was waiting for the wizard to return and Targen was waiting for the Lieutenant, the group decided to wait until the following morning to begin the next round of scouting.

In the morning, a human male approached Targen and introduced himself as Lieutenant Dan of the Red Plume. Seeing the group of people in the tavern, Lt Dan asked Targen to join him on a walk and talk. Isa snuck closely behind in an attempt to eaves drop. Her attempts at stealth did not go unnoticed by Lt. Dan and, when Isa realized that this is the case, she fell back. After he was sure that she was gone, Lt. Dan told Targen that 100 soldiers will be available and that a man wearing a pin with red paint on top will be staying in town as a contact person.

Ella tried again to visit her elusive uncle to no avail. This time, however, her aunt could tell her that he should be returning in the morning. Having already waited, the group decided to hang back another day so that they might talk to the wizard.

In the morning, the group found Jebbadah at home. He seemed a bit down for a gnome and revealed that he had been unable to obtain a particular vine used to make a strong healing potion. The vine can only be found growing in corpses in the wild, but it did not grow in cemeteries. But he knew of a place north of the pass north of Graydale. Ella and the rest of the group agreed to look into it during their scouting trip later that day. Jebbadah allowed Ella to use his pearl in order to cast identify magic on items carried by the group. During this process, they discovered that the pin obtained by Midrianna makes her appear to be more physically attractive. Carl learned that the necklace that he obtained from the pass allows him to cast the fireball spell. The potions from the pass are of healing (given to Isa) and of necrotic resistance (given to Bolton).

Before heading north, Niels shared Ingus’s poem with the group:

A Woodman’s Journey

North of where water runs black & white
Where the walls of Toril break
Having a mind for the sphere so bright
With back to the owls wake.

Walk from sunrise to sunset
On Midwinter Day
And cry out the epithet
Of a tree in your way.

Where life points the way
Make there an offer
With the breeze & the sway
Listen & proffer.

I always feed
But never thirst
To plants like the weed
I am the best and the worst.

After pondering the words for a moment, the group headed north. Ellaway sends her hawk up ahead and spots an abandoned campsite off of the trail. Upon further investigation, the group realizes that the campsite has been totally broken down. Targen and Midrianna are able to estimate 9-10 people had been staying there about three days ago and notice footsteps headed west.

The group continues north and comes down the mountain towards the Citadel of the Raven, looking for the murky forest where bodies lay in order to find the vines sought after by Jebadoh. They are able to find it with very little effort. Although the forest floor was littered with the bodies of the deceased, the flowering vines that grew from the corpses prevented any unpleasant smell. Before entering the forest, Ellaway sends her hawk out to scout and finds 18 human corpses, and the corpse of a single turtle. Targon uses divine sense to detect the undead and discovers a large presence of undead. Ella uses her hawk a second time, revealing giant spiders and some promising loot. Ali casts detect magic and is able to detect 5 magical items.

Spiders attempt to shoot webs at Isa and Bolton but miss. Ella cast phantasmal force on the spider near Bolton in the form of an attacking troll which causes the spider to turn its back towards the group. While this is happening, Ali shoots an undead in front of him while Rashid spears the undead twice with his swords causing it to die. Targon attacks an undead being while it is still prone with his great sword causing significant damage while Midrianna casts tangle on the spiders and undead nearing Isa which successfully restrains them. Isa unleashes a flurry of blows on the spider while Bolton uses a one armed attack on the undead nearby.

As Bolton’s sword strikes the living corpse, the sound of bodies moving fills the forest as the undead rise to their feet and a White archer shoots arrows towards Targon, hitting him. Ellaway casts phantasmal force which kills the spider hunting Bolton and Isa. Instead of fighting further, Ellaway begins collecting vines from corpses for her great uncle.

In the middle of the forest, using firebolt and swords, Ali and Raseed kill a second undead while Targon hits the white with his great sword. Summoning the power of flame, Carl casts fireball into a crowd of four undead, killing all but one of them. On the edge of the forest, a spider is attacked with flames cast by Midrianna and darts thrown by Isotta while Bolton again attacks the undead with his sword who, in turn, attacks Bolton. In the middle of the forest, four undead surround and attack Targen who handles the damage well.

On the edges of the forest, a spider breaks free from the tangle cast by Midrianna. Ellaway sees this and casts a ray of frost towards the spider but misses. Ali and Rasheed attack the surviving undead from the fire ball with a fire bolt and two hits from long swords, but the undead remained standing. Targen puts his hunters mark on the White and hits him with his great sword and smiting him. Seeing this, Carl casts a scorching ray towards the White from his position and hits, killing the White.

Still struggling the giant spider, Midrianna attacks with a flame blade and Isa hits him twice with her quarterstaff. Bolton again attacks the undead nearby with his sword. Targen is hit by an undead while Ali and Bolton narrowly avoid similar attempts. Midrianna is attacked by the newly freed spider. Ellaway comes in and cast color spray on the spider and undead, blinding the zombie while Ali and Rasheed attack the surviving undead again. Against all odds, the undead remained standing.

Targen attacks the only remaining untouched undead with his great sword after transferring his hunters mark while Carl casts magic muscle against the undead and remaining spider. Midrianna attacks the spider one final time with a flame blade, killing it. Isa attacks the undead remaining on the periphery with her quarterstaff and kills the injured being with a single blow. Bolton swings toward the surviving undead in the middle of the forest and misses as do the attempts made by Rasheed and Ali. Targon kills an undead, leaving only the survivor of the fire ball. Ready to end this fight, Carl places burning hands on the last remaining undead, but the undead survives. Midrianna walks up to what remains of the undead, and stabs it to death. (79 pts of damage required to kill a 22pt undead)

Exhausted, the adventurers search the forest floor. Ellaway carefully collects vines for her great uncle and everyone gathers what they can find of value including 214 gold and a pearl. Ellaway uses the pearl to cast identify magic on the remaining items which include a glass container of Keoghtom’s Ointment, a magical Great Sword, a scroll containing Dispell Magic, a vial containing the oil of sharpness, and a large, gaudy necklace. The group returns to Graydale where Ellaway gives her great uncle vines in exchange for an empty spell book and ink before joining the rest at the Gray Stag for a well-deserved meal and nights rest.

When we last left the adventurers, they had just left Hillsfar and were heading down the road to Graydale. On the way, during her night watch, Isa sees a glowing light coming from the forest. She wakes Ella and asks her to use her hawk to investigate the source of the glow. Much to their surprise, the hawk revealed a Pegasus. Isa and Ella wake up Madrianna in hopes that she could communicate with the Pegasus. As she begins her meditation, Isa heads for the Pegasus with Ella trailing behind. Once upon it, Isa begins to try to communicate. It becomes clear that the Pegasus can understand what she is saying, and after making several guesses at what the Pegasus wants, she holds up an index finger. The Pegasus puts its mouth around her finger and leaves behind a Silver pendant with a moonstone and Elven figure. She spends an hour atuning herself to the pendant and realizes that it is magical and that it needs to be broken to use. Isa asks Ella to keep the event a secret and, when Madrianna finishes her meditation, the two tell her that the Pegasus left and that they were unable to figure out what it wanted.

After traveling for a few days, the group arrives in Graydale and takes some time to explore the area. Targon visits his father who indicates that he has not received any additional news regarding the threat to their town. Ella heads to the tower in town to meet with her mentor’s brother, Jebadoh. Much to her dismay, she spoke with his wife who informed Ella that he was out in the woods. Midrianna takes the time to relax and explore the shops in town. Carl looks earnestly for the elusive Beverly with no luck. Isa visits the shrine to meditate.

After several hours, the group reconvenes at the Gray Stag and decide to head to Elmari Farm to speak with the farmers who lost their farm in a fire started by the unknown threat. Although not much information was gained, Braden indicated that the man who spoke to him was a handsome, male human with a goatee and that the group travels north for, what he estimates, is not more than a few days. He reiterates that the threat has promised to burn the village if 4/5ths of Graydale’s harvest is not given to him by High Harvestide. Before leaving, the group searches the scorched fields but find nothing.

Isa visits an exceptionally gnomy Jebadoh to ask about the pendant that she received from the Pegasus. He is able to determine that the pendant is a favor of Moonbow.

Targon, Carl, and Isa ask around town about Nels who has not been seen for several days. With the threat of the brigands looming, concern grew among these three regarding the missing Nels. Without the knowledge of the others, they decide to break into his office to see if they can find any clues of his whereabouts. Isa carefully picks the locks of his office door, his desk, and his lockbox. She eventually discovers a letter under a pile of gemstones which read:

Dear Sir,
Our efforts were unsuccessful. The object you requested has not been acquired. I am returning your funds. If we are later able to acquire it, we can renegotiate at that time.
-Ryantor

All objects are returned and the three rejoin the rest of their group at the Grey Stag where they discuss the political structure of the town. The group disbands and Targon goes to visit his father to inquire about the location of Nels and about the letter that was found. His father is unable to provide additional information and is upset about the breaking and entering. Targon asks Killion if he knows anything about the area North of Graydale. Killion tells him that the area is clannish territory filled with barbarians and giants. The people in town largely avoid the area except for those who are searching for a treasure rumored to be hidden by the founder of Graydale in the ruins.

Having gathered as much information as possible, the group decides to scout northward in search of any information regarding the brigands. One the way out of town, the group runs into Rashid and Ali who join the group on their mission. Upon reaching the foothills, Carl and Isa see a glint in the mountains and share that information with the group. Everyone heads in the direction of the flash of light when Targon and Carl see someone disappearing into the trees. As Isa carefully tries to sneak up to the man, Rashid exclaims, “There he is!” which causes the man to bolt. The group chases the man to a pass filled with orcs and gnolls. Determined to catch the running man, Isa continues forward and is hit by a javelin and is critically wounded.

Ella sends out a hawk to see if she can get more information, but sees nothing while Carl casts magic muscle towards a large ogre. Targon approaches the fallen Isa and performs lay on hands to revive her while Ali hits an ogre with a firebolt. The gnolls attempt to fight back with ranged weapons but miss Ali and Carl. Unfortunately, they hit Targon with arrows. Rashid casts fire bolt but misses his target. Ali does the same and hits successfully. Ellaway cast Tasha’s hideous laughter on one of the ogre’s, sending him to the ground in hysterics for a full minute. When only three enemies remain, a hooded archer appears from the other end of the ravine and fatally shoots an ogre. Targon kills the final ogre with his sword.

Once the battle ends, the cloaked figure approaches the group and reveals himself to be Nels! Before leaving, the group searches the canyon and finds a hidden stash. After looting the stash and the fallen creatures, the group heads back to Graydale to rest.

Targon takes time to talk to Nels who explains that he was north of Graydale looking for his father’s treasure based on a new lead received through the rumor mill. He indicates that he has not been looking for the brigands to the north. The adventurers take the time to rest and recover from the fight in the ravine at the Graystag and divide the spoils of battle.

Targen – Half-Orc Paladin of Tyr (Sam)

When we last left our intrepid adventurers they were in Hillsfar seeking a crew to defend the hamlet of Graydale from a group of brigands who had burned one of the farms and threatened to take the rest of the town if a large fee was not paid at the time of the harvest.

Awakening the next morning from the rooms at the Blushing Sapphire, Targen came down the stairs and into the tavern to find the foreigners who had previous lost a captured Pegasus, sitting at a table and nursing drinks. Targen offered them an opportunity to make some money defending Graydale, and they accepted.

Over the next several days, the group manage to attract one additional member to their crew, a halfling by the name of Bolton Thornhill. After a few more days and no further luck, the group began to set out for Graydale. Isa mentioned knowing a quicker route through town, avoiding some complications with events that clogged streets, only to find themselves passing by a strange scene.

It turned out that the Berginblade estate was under siege in broad daylight by a sneaky group of bandits who had caused the guards and Mary Berginblade to sleep and them ensured they remained unconscious. Talking with the 6-year-old Suzanna Berginblade at her trinket stand outside the gates, they learned that “mommy took a nap.” Carl purchased a die from a childhood game from her, while Midrianna bought a small pin.

They healed Mary and sent her and Suzanna for the town guard and secured her permission to search the home. Entering through the rear, the group dispatched all the thieves but one, who escaped on a stolen Berginblade horse. The freed Jonathon Berginblade and with him searched the house. Isa noticed a hidden door in the floor of the larder and hung back to check it out, discovering that it led to a vault underneath the Berginblade estate. Try as she might, she was unable to get passed the vault’s security and so returned and later informed the group.

In talking with Jonathon Berginblade, he insisted that the event was merely a robbery, but several members of the group suspected he was hiding something. Additionally, the stable boy had mentioned the use of magic but none of their opponents used any magic in the conflict. When the town guard arrived, they turned over the sole surviving thief.

Later, Bolton used his background as a soldier to buddy up to the guards at the prison to gain access to the prisoner. The guards had come to the conclusion that the matter was a simple smash and grab and the thieves simply didn’t want to risk adding murder to the charges if they were caught, and had hired a spell caster to use a sleeping spell to help cover their entry.

Interrogating the prisoner, the group learned that he did not know who had hired him, but was able to describe the two seeming leaders. The more senior of the two was indeed a spell caster, who had disguised himself as the elderly woman the group had encountered outside the home, across the street. The other did the recruiting at the Drinking Green Lion, and had been inside, questioning Mr. Berginblade about the location of a vault.

Carl and Isa slipped into disguises and went over to the Drinking Green Lion and asked around, learning that the man whose description they had had not been there for the last few weeks, but before that had been their frequently recruiting. No one seemed to know the man by his description.

Carl, as his alternate persona Juan Julio, along with Isa struck up a conversation with a table of shady looking individuals, an elf who gestured but never spoke, a tiefling who seemed to only speak in a tongue unfamiliar to the two, and a human who negotiated for the group. Over the length of the conversation, Carl secured 5 gp and a dagger used to threaten the two. In exchange, he gave them information about a vault hidden under the property across the street from the Berginblade estate.

The next day, the group finally left Hillsfar, setting out down the road to Graydale.

Rewards:
Experience: 300
Down Days: 10
Gold: (roughly 35 each, already distributed)
Intangible Rewards: The favor of noble Jonathon Berginblade who is sending a contingent of Red Plumes to aid at the time the brigands are scheduled to return to Graydale
